History of CRM: From the Rolodex to AI
Seven decades, three waves
CRM software emerged in the 1980s as digital Rolodex applications and evolved through three great waves — the database-marketing era, the SaaS revolution, and today's AI-augmented platforms. This is the full timeline, from a rotating card file in 1958 to autonomous sales agents in 2026.

Why CRM exists at all
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software exists because of a simple commercial truth: it costs far more to win a new customer than to keep an existing one. For most of business history, companies chased volume — sell to as many people as possible — and ignored what they already knew about the customers they had. Purchase history, preferences, and behavior went unrecorded, so every sale started from zero.
CRM turned that logic around. It rests on two functions: store what you know about each customer, and act on it — serve the right person, at the right moment, through the right channel. Those two functions are much older than software. What has changed over seven decades is the technology that carries them: from a rotating card file on a sales rep's desk to cloud platforms that draft emails with AI.

Everything that followed was, in essence, an attempt to do what the Rolodex did — faster, with broader access, and across many offices at once.
Pen, paper, and the Rolodex (before 1980)
The earliest CRM "system" was a salesperson's notebook: names, phone numbers, and a few notes, retrieved by flipping pages. The most iconic upgrade arrived in 1958, when Arnold Neustadter patented the Rolodex — a rotating card index in which every customer had a card with name, phone, address, and notes. Large enterprises ran "account books" maintained by departmental secretaries; banks kept account cards at each branch.
These paper systems already embodied the fundamental CRM insight — every customer interaction should be tracked centrally — but they were slow to search, painful to update, impossible to analyze, and chained to a single desk. A rep who left the company often took the relationships with them, card by card.
Database marketing and the digital Rolodex (1980s)
CRM's efficiency jumped dramatically when it moved from the physical world into software. In the early 1980s, two parallel tracks emerged.
On PCs, contact-management software digitized the Rolodex. ACT! (Conductor Software, 1986) was the first commercial product of its kind — later acquired by Symantec in 1993, then Sage in 1999, and still active today. GoldMine (1989) followed with early multi-user network capabilities.
Meanwhile, large enterprises built database marketing systems on Oracle, DB2, or Sybase mainframes. Airlines, banks, and retailers used statistical modeling on customer data to personalize communication — American Airlines' AAdvantage loyalty program (1981) is a landmark example.
This era introduced the core concepts that persist in every CRM today: contact records, activity history, sales pipelines, and reporting. The limitation was reach — systems were single-user or LAN-based, and sharing data across geographies required nightly batch syncs.
Sales force automation and the birth of "CRM" (1993–1999)
In 1993, Tom Siebel — a former Oracle executive — founded Siebel Systems and took contact management enterprise-wide. His category, Sales Force Automation (SFA), combined database marketing with contact management and centered it on the sales process: contact management, pipeline management, and task tracking in one system.
The mid-90s also settled a naming battle. Competing labels — Enterprise Customer Management (ECM), Customer Information System (CIS), Personal Information Manager (PIM) — faded away, and by about 1995 Customer Relationship Management became the permanent term. Siebel expanded from sales into marketing and customer service, and by the late 1990s was the leading enterprise CRM vendor of its era, with customers including Cisco, Honda, IBM, and JP Morgan. Siebel also shipped one of the first mobile CRM products in the late 1990s.
But enterprise CRM of this era was heavy. Deployments were multi-year programmes run by systems integrators, with budgets to match — which is precisely why the next wave found an opening. Oracle acquired Siebel in 2006 for $5.85 billion; SAP (2001) and Microsoft (2003, later Dynamics 365) entered the market in the same period.
The SaaS revolution (1999–2015)
In February 1999, Marc Benioff — another former Oracle executive — founded Salesforce.com in a rented San Francisco apartment, with co-founders Parker Harris, Dave Moellenhoff, and Frank Dominguez. The mission was radical for its time: deliver CRM entirely through a web browser, on subscription, with no servers to install — famously branded as "the end of software."
The milestones came quickly: IPO in 2004, the AppExchange marketplace in 2005, the Force.com platform in 2007 (turning CRM from an application into a platform), Service Cloud in 2010, and Marketing Cloud via the ExactTarget acquisition in 2013. Around 2008, social CRM shifted the industry's focus from transactions to ongoing interactions, as companies met customers on the social platforms where they actually spent time.
SaaS also opened the market beyond the enterprise giants. SugarCRM (2004) took an open-source route, Zoho CRM (2005) bootstrapped from India without venture capital, HubSpot (2006) built inbound-marketing-first CRM, and Pipedrive (2010) put a visual pipeline at the center. For the first time, a 20-person company could afford the same class of tooling as a Fortune 500.

AI-augmented and vertical CRM (2020–present)
The 2020s brought two parallel shifts.
AI integration. Starting around 2020–2021, every major vendor began layering AI onto CRM. Salesforce launched Einstein GPT (2023) and then Agentforce (2024); HubSpot introduced Breeze AI (2024); Microsoft shipped Copilot for Sales (2024). Typical AI features today include natural-language queries ("show me deals over $50k untouched for two weeks"), AI lead scoring, drafted emails that a human reviews before sending, sales forecasting, sentiment analysis on incoming messages, and business-card OCR.
Vertical and regional CRM. The dominance of global platforms opened space for CRMs built around a specific industry or region — better local compliance, language, and business practices than a one-size-fits-all giant can deliver. Bitrix24 (2012) grew this way in Russia and the CIS, and country-specific CRMs now thrive across LATAM, MENA, and Southeast Asia.

One thing is unlikely to change: the CRM remains the system of record. What is changing fast is the interface on top of it — increasingly a natural-language conversation rather than forms and lists.
Today's constraint: not the software, the setup
Finding a CRM in 2026 is not hard. What is hard is for a team that keeps its leads in a spreadsheet, its conversations in WhatsApp and its quotes in email to tie the three to the same record.

There is a structural reason we can: the core team is small and senior, and the team that does the setup is the team that answers support.
The technical position is equally plain. Your CRM data is kept in a separate database that belongs to you: separate table files, a separate backup and separate file storage. That separation is at the database level, not an application setting. All components sit in three separate locations inside the European Union; the city-level breakdown and the backup detail are written on the security page. The product ships with 183 business objects out of the box, and a tenant adds its own fields without writing code.
Our limits
Rapitek CRM does not have sixty years of product history behind it. The product is new; the team is not. The history in this article is the industry's, not ours.
We do not publish customer numbers. We cannot write a sentence such as “this many businesses use it” today, because the usage base is not yet mature enough to produce a reference and there is no figure for us to fill in.
We do not commit to an uptime figure. The only way we could write something like 99.9% would be to write it without measuring it; there is no independent service watching our tenant addresses from outside today.
Our mobile app does not work offline. Offline mode was removed from the product on 30 May 2026: there is no read cache and no write queue. The sentence that can be written is this one — if the connection drops while you are filling in a form, what you typed is held on the device for 24 hours.
We do not hold an ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certificate, and we will not claim one until we do. What we measure on the security side, and what we do not, is written out item by item on our security page.
We do not offer an option to keep data in Türkiye. There is no region-selection mechanism: none of the 30 fields on the tenant record carries a region or a country.
